Artist's Statement "When your work speaks for itself don't interrupt." Okay. There it is . That was it. But as you can imagine, I do have one or two more things to say, not about my work but rather about artist statements. I hate to say it, but artist statements are stupid. They are silly. Regardless of the opaque language or disappointing rationale of the artist, they serve no purpose. They give no insight into the work, or the interests and motivations of the artist. I am curious why the audience would care to know about an artists motivations when it is the results that are important. And what can any artist say about their results? Why don't you give me your audience statement? I'm the one making something. I could use the constructive input. As audiences I'm not sure how an artist's statement can help, except help make you a rube. Artist Statements are a form of marketing, or prepackaging of product. C'mon art isn't reduced to that is it? |
