About technique
I don't think it is unusual or impolite when people look at art and ask regarding the technique. In some quarters, it is considered a sign of ignorance, and if one were to ask, they are given unpleasant responses. I would encourage the curious to ask regardless. That noted, I also think that audiences should ask after technique with caution, as this knowledge is somewhat "backstage" and can reduce and dismantle what may be wonderous and has been assembled, very generously, to be seen as a whole.
In reference to my technique I am often asked a short list of questions which I will here anticipate someone may ask again.
I am self taught and never attended a university art program, or atelier. My drawings and paintings are works of imagination, I do not use models or references. The works are not drawn from memory; that is, I do not have a photographic memory and the works are not necessarily produced from experiences I may have had.
I have been drawing, roughly, since I was three and painting, with any seriousness, since around age 18. I draw thousands of pictures a year. I study every day, but I know many artists who do not and are very fine artists. My drawings and paintings are often historical or mythic riddles.
